Visiting the beach in Quercianella

On Friday we decided to spend a relaxing day at the beach.  Because, you know, our holiday has been so busy and stressful so far, and we really need a day to relax.  We drove down to Quercinella, which is a small town about 45 minutes drive (or so) which had a few options for beach relaxing, and some nice restaurants as well.

The one we selected (basically due to proximity to a nice restaurant) was fairly rocky, and pretty busy too.  We had a nice lunch (yes I know, food pictures!) and then me & Jack went for a swim while the adults napped.

Can you see me & Jack in the water?

Did I mention how busy it was?  I'd hate to see it on a weekend, or in August (when most Italians take their holidays).

I'll talk a bit about our technology here, because as you can imagine driving in this part of the world is a bit of a challenge.  We have a kind of half solution for this.  I bought an Android tablet for my China trip, and we've found here in Italy that it makes a darn handy GPS!  Before we drove down to the beach we mapped the route, and following Google's directions made it from home to the beach with no trouble at all.  The tablet even told us exactly where we were with a little blue arrow.

Unfortunately ("disgraziatamente") you can only map a route when you have a wi fi connection handy, so when it came time to figure out our return route we were out of luck.  We tried to just follow the same blue line home, but ended up running well off course.  Thankfully the GS told us where we were at all times (although not the best route to follow to get home) so we did manage to get home eventually.

If anyone knows any handy tricks with an Asus Transformer tablet and Google Maps please let me know.  We've figured out how to make the maps available offline (we have about 100 MB of Italy downloaded) and we can plot and follow a route, so this tablet gets an A+ for usefulness here in Italy.  However if we could figure out how to store our driving directions to make them available offline it would be perfect!

(We also took the tablet on a hike today, but that's yet another story.  More to come!)

Despite our exhausting day at the beach (and drive home) we decided to tackle a home made pizza for dinner!  So that will be the topic of my next post.
